What is something people need to understand Before Gossiping?

Before you tell someone something that isn’t about you, just ask yourself these 3 questions.

  1. Is it true ?
  2. Is it kindness?
  3. Is it necessary or helpful?

If what you’re about to say doesn’t fit all of those criteria, keep it to yourself. Give everyone the same respect that you would like to be treated with. You don’t have to participate in the rumor. Instead, go talk to them, not about them.

True intellectuals talk about ideas and solutions, small minds talk about people and problems. I have always been able to get an accurate read on someone by carefully listening to what they talk about!

Nothing positive comes from gossip. Reputations can be ruined, employment opportunities may be tarnished and personal relationships can be damaged or destroyed. Before you engage in any type of gossip I encourage you to ask yourself these 3 questions. I believe that it will help you to make a better, more empowered decision.

Here is a beautiful conversation of a guru with his disciple. Take this “Triple Filter Test” Before You Engage In Gossip.

Let me narrate you a small conversation between a Guru and his disciple:-

Disciple: Do you know what I just heard about your friend?

Guru: Hold on a minute. Before you say anything I would like you to pass a little test. It is called as Triple Filter Test.

Disciple: Triple Filter Test? What is it?

Guru: Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you are going to say? That is why I called it as Triple Filter Test.

The First Filter is “Truth”

Guru: Are you absolutely sure that what you are going to tell me about my friend is true?

Disciple: No, I just heard about it.

Guru: All right, you don’t know if it is true or false.

The Second Filter is “The Filter of Goodness”

Guru: Is what you are going to tell me about my friend is something good?

Disciple: No, on contrary

Guru: You want to tell me something bad about my friend but you are not sure whether it is true

The Third Filter is “The Filter of Usefulness”

Guru: What you want to tell me about my friend is going to be useful?

Disciple: No, not really.

Guru Concludes:

WHAT YOU WANT TO TELL IS NEITHER TRUE NOR GOOD NOR EVEN USEFUL. SO PLEASE DO NOT CONVEY A WRONG MESSAGE TO ME.

MORAL: Before you speak something, check whether it is useful, meaningful and helpful
